WASHINGTON – On Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) joined U.S. Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), and 25 of their colleagues on a bipartisan resolution celebrating National Charter Schools Week and commending charter schools on their contribution to education.
“National Charter Schools Week is a time to celebrate the benefit that families have in the ability to choose the best type of education for their children. The increase in demand nationwide for charter schools demonstrates how important choice in education is for families. I will continue to advocate and fight for school choice in Wisconsin and across the nation,” said Sen. Johnson.
Sen. Johnson has been a consistent advocate in the Senate for school choice, charter schools and parental rights. Each year, Sen. Johnson joins a resolution in support of National School Choice Week. In June of 2015, he inquired about the Justice Department’s investigation into the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program (MPCP) to ensure the investigation would not undermine the successful program. The Justice Department subsequently closed its investigations with no findings of any wrongdoing. Last month, he urged Department of Education Secretary Cardona to reconsider proposed rules redefining the Charter Schools Program (CSP), stripping parents of their ability to choose the best school for their child.
Sen. Johnson also hosted a listening session with Wisconsin parents to hear their concerns about COVID-19 masking practices, critical race theory and gender identity curriculum.
Sens. Johnson, Scott and Bennet were joined on the resolution by Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Tom Carper (D-Del.), Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), Todd Young (R-Ind.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
