Manchin, Capito Announce $420K To West Virginia University for Stroke, Alzheimer’s Disease Research

Washington, DC – U.S. Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $420,186 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to West Virginia University (WVU) for critical research into stroke and Alzheimer’s disease related dementias that will help advance our scientific understanding of aging.

“Alzheimer’s is a heartbreaking disease that affects more than 39,000 West Virginians. Stroke is the seventh leading cause of death in West Virginia. It’s crucial to invest in research so we can learn more about the causes of stroke and Alzheimer’s related dementias and discover treatments for them,” said Senator Manchin. “As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I’m pleased HHS is investing in this research at WVU, and I will continue advocating for funding to support vital scientific research at WVU and across the Mountain State.”

“Having cared for both of my parents who suffered from Alzheimer’s, I understand the impact that this disease and others can have on caregivers and families,” Senator Capito said. “That is why I have worked hard to increase funding for related research by 500% since 2015, and continue to advocate on behalf of improved treatments and a cure. West Virginia University is a leader in stroke and Alzheimer’s disease research, and I’m thrilled to help support their efforts to continue their important work.”
