WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) met with the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) Secretary Marty Walsh. During their meeting, Durbin and Walsh discussed the DOL Fiscal Year 2023 budget, which totals $14.6 billion. The funds would go toward Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) programs, Reentry Employment Opportunities, apprenticeship grants, Job Corps, YouthBuild, and more. Durbin and Walsh also discussed health care workforce shortages that have been magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic, including Durbin’s efforts to build pipeline programs for local students into health care careers, increase funding for medical residency programs, and provision in the American Rescue Plan to provide $1 billion for the National Health Service and Nurse Corps programs.
“Today’s meeting with Secretary Walsh was productive. We agree that we need a budget that supports our American workers and continues to build our economy in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. We will continue to advocate for budgets and policies that support hardworking Illinoisans and their families,” said Durbin.
