Klobuchar recently urged the Justice Department to devote more resources to address increases in violent carjackings
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) held a roundtable with police chiefs and other law enforcement leaders from across Minnesota to highlight efforts to combat increases in violent carjackings.
“The carjacking numbers are so sobering because we’ve seen people that aren’t just robbed of their vehicles, but their sense of security…People should not have to endure that kind of trauma just because they’re at a certain place at a certain time,” said Klobuchar.
Klobuchar discussed the need to strengthen coordination between federal, state, and local law enforcement to address these crimes. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee Klobuchar recently fought to confirm Andy Luger to be U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota. Luger, who was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on a bipartisan vote of 60-36 on March 24, 2022, has committed to counter increases in carjackings and other violent crimes.
Klobuchar was joined by St. Paul Chief of Police Todd Axtell; Bloomington Chief of Police Booker Hodges; Minneapolis Police Department Special Crimes Investigation Division Commander Giovanni Veliz; Richfield Chief of Police Jay Henthorne; Moorhead Chief of Police Shannon Monroe; and Minnesota Chiefs of Police Association Executive Director Jeff Potts.
Recently, Klobuchar urged the U.S. Department of Justice to prioritize resources for state and local law enforcement to address increases in carjackings. At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last month, Klobuchar emphasized the need to address recent increases in carjackings. She also highlighted the importance of passing her bipartisan COPS Reauthorization Act, which would provide grants for local law enforcement to hire and train new officers.
