MINNEAPOLIS – Today, U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) delivered remarks at the ceremonial swearing-in of U.S. Attorney for Minnesota Andy Luger. As a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Klobuchar shepherded Luger’s nomination through the committee and led the confirmation efforts on the Senate floor, where he was confirmed with bipartisan support last month.

“In Minnesota, we need a U.S. Attorney who pursues justice without fear or favor to keep our families safe. Andy Luger has proven he can do just that, which is why I fought to get his nomination through the Senate with bipartisan support. As U.S. Attorney, Andy earned the respect of the law enforcement community and built partnerships across our state with federal, state, and tribal law enforcement and community organizations. I am confident that those relationships will serve him well as he steps into this role once again. He will bring key leadership to the U.S. Attorney’s office at a critical time to make our communities safer,” said Klobuchar.

In February 2021, Klobuchar and Smith announced the formation of a selection committee of distinguished Minnesotans to assist in making recommendations to the President for candidates to serve in federal law enforcement positions in Minnesota. The Committee was chaired by John Choi, Ramsey County Attorney. Luger, who previously served as U.S. Attorney for Minnesota from 2014 to 2017, was one of the candidates sent to President Biden by Senators Klobuchar and Smith following the recommendations from the selection committee.

The U.S. Attorney is the chief federal law enforcement official in the state, responsible for the prosecution of criminal cases brought by the federal government as well as the prosecution and defense of civil cases involving the federal government.
