Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) joined U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and a bipartisan group of women Senators in a resolution to recognize women’s roles in all aspects of the defense of Ukraine and the preservation of Ukraine’s freedom. The resolution recognizes that women are often the targets of deliberate violence during conflicts, which is evident through Russia’s deliberate attacks on maternity wards and use of rape as a weapon of war. This resolution calls on all countries to provide aid to refugees and support women in Ukraine who are keeping families and children safe, delivering supplies and weapons, administering medical care, fighting as part of the armed forces, and more.

“In Russia’s devastating war on Ukraine, women and their families have been specific targets of violence and atrocities, at the same time that many women have taken up arms to defend their homeland. I’m proud to join this resolution to support Ukraine’s women, and I’ll continue working in the Senate to oppose Russian aggression.”

Text of the resolution is available here.

Senator Cortez Masto has consistently advocated for the U.S. to stand up to Russian aggression and support Ukrainian sovereignty. In April, she supported bipartisan bills to suspend normal trade relations with both Russia and Belarus, which has given Russia key support in the war, and to prohibit oil and gas imports from Russia. In January, she voted in support of sanctions against Russia and its Nord Stream 2 pipeline, and she supported similar sanctions in the 2020 and 2021 National Defense Authorization Acts.
