WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $823,910 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for research projects at West Virginia University (WVU) and Marshall University. The funding will support research to develop a new digital testing platform with high detection sensitivity for infectious diseases, cancers and cardiovascular disease, and research to investigate subterranean hazards and sustainable uses of abandoned coal mines.
“This funding will help increase the ability of our medical institutions to test for infectious and chronic illness, as well as improve our engineering research experience capabilities underground. Initiatives like this create great opportunities for our students, and I thank NSF for their continued support,” Senator Capito said.
“The National Science Foundation continues to be a strong partner for West Virginia through their support for critical research and educational opportunities that benefit students across the Mountain State. I am pleased NSF is investing in these research projects at WVU and Marshall University, and I look forward to seeing the positive impacts of the projects,” Senator Manchin said. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue advocating for funding to support scientific research and educational opportunities in West Virginia.”
