Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) announced that $89 million would be coming to Nevada for a range of transportation solutions that she pushed to secure in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today announced funding levels for the coming year for transportation programs nationwide, including $59,073,252 for the Las Vegas-Henderson area, $11,668,176 for the Reno area, and $4,203,118 for the Lake Tahoe region.
“Funding for transportation that I helped pass in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is going to get Nevadans where they need to go more safely and efficiently, support our economy, and create good-paying jobs. I’m going to keep working in the Senate to make sure our state gets the resources it deserves, so we can grow our economy and modernize our transportation options.”
This funding will allow Nevada transit agencies to buy new buses and railcars, address their repair backlogs, modernize their fleets, and transition to new technologies to address the climate crisis and protect public health. These upgrades will support the expansion of U.S. manufacturing due to Buy America requirements that apply to steel, iron, and other materials used in public transportation projects that receive federal support.
Through her Innovation State Initiative, Senator Cortez Masto has been working throughout her time in the Senate to develop innovative transportation solutions for all Nevada communities. She introduced a comprehensive package of bills designed to promote the use of cleaner transportation, create jobs, improve the health and safety of Nevada communities, and reduce gasoline demand. She successfully pushed to include many of these in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Package to help Nevada communities upgrade their roads and bridges, improve transportation planning, expand electric vehicle infrastructure, make traveling to school safer for students, and support smart cities that use technology to solve transportation challenges. Senator Cortez Masto ensured that the law included a requirement that the federal government create an EV commission, develop a national strategy for the electrification of the transportation sector, and map EV infrastructure. It also includes Cortez Masto’s Moving FIRST Act to promote smart city innovations in transportation systems in communities of all sizes and multiple provisions to promote good-paying jobs in transportation and better connect the transportation system to affordable housing. The Senator recently called on the administration to swiftly implement these pieces of legislation.
