WASHINGTON – U.S. Senators Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, and Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) are calling on New Mexicans to submit their interest in requesting Fiscal Year 2023 (FY23) federal funds for local projects. The FY23 appropriations process includes opportunities to fund local projects through Congressionally Directed Spending.
As part of the historic Omnibus Appropriations Agreement for Fiscal Year 2022, Senators Heinrich and Luján secured nearly $160 million in Congressionally Directed Spending for more than 75 local projects across New Mexico.
“We worked hand-in-hand with communities in every corner of New Mexico to ensure that more federal resources found their way to our state,” said Heinrich. “I’m committed to proactively seeking out local projects that will truly have an impact on the lives of New Mexicans and delivering funding directly to them—and do so with transparency and accountability.”
“It was an honor to work alongside Senator Heinrich to secure over 70 congressionally directed spending requests for local projects that will make a difference in the lives of New Mexicans,” said Luján. “Now, I’m pleased to announce applications are open for state government entities, municipalities, local government entities, and non-profit organizations with local projects that will uplift New Mexico’s communities.”
In May 2021, Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) announced a restoration of Congress’ constitutional power to approve Congressionally Directed Spending requests with enhanced transparency and accountability measures, leading to the new process. More information about the process for Congressionally Directed Spending requests for Fiscal Year 2023 is available on Senator Heinrich’s website.
