FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) today joined Governor Jim Justice (R-W.Va.), Congresswoman Carol Miller (R-W.Va.-03), and state and local officials in Fayetteville, W.Va. to mark the announcement of the redevelopment of the town’s schoolhouses, which will be renovated and built as boutique hotel rooms and new apartments.

“When we pushed to designate New River Gorge as a national park and preserve, this kind of investment and development is exactly what we had in mind,” Senator Capito said. “So many people, from Chelsea Ruby and our tourism department to our county commissioners, the mayor, Governor Justice, and others, have played such a key role in helping showcase the Park to those in and outside our state. We greatly appreciate Charlie Wendell, a Fayetteville native, and Mountain Shore Properties for seeing the potential in our not-so-hidden gem and making this key investment that will have a positive impact on this community and West Virginia for years to come.”

The redevelopment by Mountain Shore Properties, a $15 million investment made as a result of the national park designation, will result in 45-50 boutique hotel rooms, 20-24 new apartment units, 30 construction jobs, and 25 full-time jobs.

In October 2019, Senator Capito introduced the New River Gorge Park and Preserve Designation Act, while Congresswoman Miller introduced the companion bill in the House. The legislation maintains hunting and fishing within the preserve area—areas where sportsmen currently enjoy hunting and fishing. The legislation also specifically protects hunting, fishing, and trapping on privately owned land and will preserve and help grow the vibrant outdoor recreation industry on the New River. The New River Gorge has a long and rich history that is preserved through this legislation, which was signed into law in 2020.
