Washington (March 23, 2022) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) made his official Twitch debut today, making him the first U.S. Senator to utilize the live streaming platform from the United States Capitol. With over 1,200 people tuned in to watch, Senator Markey used the opportunity to discuss his latest bill, the Connecting Hard-to-reach Areas with Renewably Generated Energy Act (CHARGE) Actwhich would lay the groundwork for America’s clean energy revolution while simultaneously improving energy reliability, lowering costs for consumers, and spurring economic competition.

To have a nation that runs on green energy, we need first to build green infrastructure. The CHARGE Act positions the United States to proactively plan and build a reliable and resilient energy grid across broad regions of the country, to bridge the gap between the supply of renewable energy and the cities and towns that need energy access.

“For telecommunications, we needed a new information superhighway. And that’s what we call this digital revolution right now, which by the way, makes it possible for us to have a Twitch this afternoon […]  Well, the same thing is true here, we need the same kind of innovation, the same kind of forward-looking vision,” said Senator Markey during his Twitch stream.

The CHARGE Act, introduced last week by Senator Markey, is co-sponsored by Senators Tina Smith (D-Minn.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.).
