Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, announced $174,716 from the American Rescue Plan through the National Science Foundation (NSF) for cancer detection research at Marshall University. The funding will support the development of a new hybrid interactive machine learning software, which will allow cancer researchers to detect cancer areas quickly and with high accuracy. The software will benefit rural areas such as Appalachia which have a lack of pathologists, and will eventually reduce the cost of cancer diagnosis and treatment.
“The National Science Foundation continues to be a great partner for West Virginia higher education institutions through their support for critical research and educational opportunities across the Mountain State. I am pleased with this investment in essential research at Marshall University, and I look forward to seeing the positive impacts of the cancer-detecting software for our fellow West Virginians. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue advocating for funding to support scientific research and educational opportunities in West Virginia,” said Senator Manchin.
