U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) released the following statement after introducing legislation to rename the U.S. Post Office in Canyon, Texas after Gary Fletcher, a decorated Vietnam veteran, successful rancher and banker, and beloved husband, father, and grandfather. A companion bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives by U.S. Representative Ronny Jackson (TX-13).
“Guided by his strong work ethic and commitment to the Panhandle, Gary Fletcher’s life is remembered by his service to his country and his community,” said Sen. Cornyn. “I am proud to honor his legacy this way and I ask my colleagues in the Senate to join me in supporting this bill.”
Biography of Gary Fletcher:
Born in Amarillo, Texas, Fletcher graduated from Canyon High School then later joined the United States Army in 1968 as a specialist E5. After serving in the Vietnam War, Fletcher was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. Returning to Canyon, Fletcher graduated from West Texas State University, now known as West Texas A&M University, with a Bachelor of Business Administration and Finance. He spent 34 years as a banker and 45 years as a rancher and owner of the Salt Fork Ranch in Clarendon, Texas. A lifelong volunteer to organizations like United Way and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Fletcher was dedicated to giving back to the community. Fletcher passed away on October 29, 2020.
