WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) applauded the inclusion of $13.6 billion in emergency funding for Ukraine in the FY 2022 bipartisan funding bill, which passed the Senate last night. This includes $6.5 billion through the Department of Defense for emergency supplemental assistance, $3.9 billion through the State Department for humanitarian assistance, and $2.8 billion through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to provide aid for vulnerable populations in Ukraine and Eastern Europe. In addition, the bill provides $300 million to the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, the program that Portman has led efforts in the Senate to fund.

“We must do everything we can right now to support the people of Ukraine, and I applaud the passage of this vital funding,” Senator Portman. “Despite the fact that each day Russia continues to escalate its attacks, President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people show bravery and resolve in the face of tremendous adversity. The United States must continue do all it can to support Ukraine as they fight for the future of their country.”

As Co-Chair of the Senate Ukraine Caucus, Senator Portman has been leading efforts in Congress to supply Ukraine with the assistance they need to defend themselves against Russia. Last weekend, Senator Portman and his colleagues spoke with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the need for Congress to approve billions of dollars in emergency military and humanitarian assistance for Ukraine. This week, Portman pressed multiple Biden administration witnesses on the need for the United States to deliver fighter jets to Ukraine immediately, especially after Poland offered to give their MiG-29s to Ukraine, with the help of the United States.
