WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) announced that his amendment to the reports section of the Haiti Development, Accountability, and Institutional Transparency Initiative Act, to address kidnappings in Haiti, has been included in the FY 2022 bipartisan funding agreement.
This amendment requires “an assessment of U.S. interagency efforts to combat kidnapping and armed violence in Haiti.” Senator Portman originally offered the amendment after 17 missionaries from Christian Aid Ministries, a Millersburg, Ohio, based missionary organization were kidnapped outside Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in October of last year.
“I am pleased that my amendment to help address the lawless situations we are seeing in Haiti has been included in the FY 2022 bipartisan funding bill,” said Senator Portman. “Unfortunately, kidnapping in Haiti is an all-too common occurrence, as seen by the senseless kidnappings of the missionaries from the Ohio-based Christian Aid Ministries last year. I’m pleased that all of these missionaries are now safe, but the U.S. government needs a whole of government approach to better address this problem and this amendment will help take steps to do just that.”
