Washington – Today, U.S. Senator Tim Scott (R-S.C.) joined Senator James Risch (R-Idaho) and their Republican colleagues at a press conference to show support for Ukraine and call on President Biden to adopt a strategy of energy independence. Sen. Scott also joined John Roberts and Sandra Smith of America Reports on Fox News to discuss President Biden’s failure of leadership and the need to secure energy independence. This week, Sen. Scott also penned an op-ed arguing that Biden’s strategy is good for Putin and bad for Americans.
Energy Independence = National Security

“Thank you all for coming. I’ll make this short and sweet as well.
“American energy independence and national security should be as close as wet is to the water; they’re inseparable.
“So, when we talk about the importance of shutting off Russian energy in America, we’re talking about shutting off $60 million dollars a day.
“Over the last 12 months, we’ve sent Ukraine about a billion dollars. Every day, we’re sending the Russians $60 million dollars.
“If we’re serious about our national security, we have to be equally as serious about our ability to produce our own energy, and then to become a net exporter.”
Strong Leadership is the Best Deterrent

On Biden’s leadership … “We have the same failed leadership from President Biden as we had in 2014. What the Russians understand is power. We didn’t see this under President Trump and now we are seeing it again. What do those two have in common — 2014 and 2022? Weak leadership from our White House. Strong leadership is, in fact, the best repellent to an eastern mindset.”
On energy independence … “Too many Americans can ill-afford any more increases at the pump or when it’s time to heat your home or cool you home; they have to make a decision about whether or not they can afford to do that plus take their medicine. This is a catastrophe that can be avoided. We have to focus our attention and our efforts on being energy independent because this we have seen before; and if we don’t learn the lesson now, we will see it again.”
