WASHINGTON–U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, released the following statement after Senate Republicans blocked consideration of the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), legislation to guarantee equal access to abortion by overturning and halting restrictions that interfere with a patient’s individual choice and the provider-patient relationship.

“Since Republican leaders aggressively packed the Supreme Court with justices willing to gut reproductive rights, we’ve seen an unprecedented attack on reproductive freedom. More than 100 new abortion restrictions, including the abominable Texas abortion ban, were signed into law in states across the country just this year. The Women’s Health Protection Act would defend against these attacks and safeguard equal access to abortion care. We can’t rely on the Supreme Court to uphold Roe Congress needs to step up and protect the right to access abortion for every American. This fight is not over,” said Murphy.
