WASHINGTON – U.S. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL), a member of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, met virtually today with the Illinois Soybean Association to discuss agricultural priorities for Illinois’ soybean growers. On the call, the group emphasized the importance of continued federal support for building new foreign markets for soybeans, the challenge of rising input costs, and how the Senate Agriculture Committee is preparing for the 2023 Farm Bill. The group also expressed their appreciation for Durbin’s longtime support for expanding the use of soy-based biodiesel, and his work to secure $829 million in federal funding for the Navigation Ecosystem Sustainability Program (NESP), which will modernize Illinois locks and dams to strengthen the commercial transportation of Illinois farm commodities to international markets and restore the ecosystems of Illinois’ rivers.
“Illinois soybean farmers work hard to make our state the top soybean producer in the nation, and I want to continue supporting them by being their partner at the federal level,” said Durbin. “We had a productive conversation about the agricultural strides being made in Illinois, as well as how to make the U.S. soybean market stronger than ever.”
