U.S. Senator Ben Sasse, a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence who has been calling to cut Russia off from the SWIFT international payment system for weeks, issued the following statement on the news that “selected Russian banks are removed from the SWIFT messaging system.”
“Putin’s troops are parachuting into Kyiv right now, and these incremental SWIFT measures are not enough. The US and Europe are still holding back. Cut off all Russian banks immediately, because sanctions do matter, but we need more and faster. While politicians endlessly haggle over rubles and euros, Ukrainian freedom-fighters need life-and-death, real-time intelligence to kill Russian invaders, not more half-ass bureaucratic measures.”
