WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the top Republican on the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, released the following statement today after the announcement that the U.S. military conducted a counterterrorism operation killing Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, the leader of the Islamic State militant group:

I thank the incredible men and women of our military for their brave actions in conducting a successful counterterrorism operation against the ISIS leader. The Biden administration also deserves credit for authorizing the operation.

“However, the success of this mission cannot easily be replicated in Afghanistan.

“I’ve repeatedly raised concerns about just how difficult it is to conduct the over-the-horizon counterterrorism operations in Afghanistan that this administration promotes. I pressed Biden officials on the limitations of this strategy during yesterday’s frustrating briefing, but received no honest answers.

“We must be clear-eyed about the serious threat ISIS-K and a resurgent al-Qaeda pose to our national security. It’s time the Biden administration take concrete steps to address their failures in Afghanistan and combat this threat.”
