A cancer survivor herself, Klobuchar leads bipartisan legislation to promote the use of preventive health care services
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) issued the statement below on the Biden administration’s relaunch of the Cancer Moonshot program. The initiative’s goals include reducing the death rate from cancer by at least 50 percent over the next 25 years, improving the experience of people and families living with and surviving cancer, and encouraging people to receive cancer screenings that were missed as a result of the pandemic. As a recent cancer survivor and strong advocate for cancer screenings, Klobuchar will attend the announcement at the White House this afternoon.
“As more than one in three adults reported delaying or forgoing health care during the pandemic, I’m glad to see President Biden is relaunching this initiative to help people get the care they need. Following my breast cancer diagnosis last year, this issue is personal to me. While I was fortunate to have caught the cancer at an early stage, increasingly that is not the case for many. That is why I partnered with a bipartisan group of my colleagues to introduce legislation to promote the use of preventive health care services. The Cancer Moonshot program will complement this work to increase access to routine screenings like mammograms and colonoscopies, marking important progress as we continue pushing for advancements in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment to save lives.”
In October, Klobuchar partnered with Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), John Thune (R-SD), and Mike Rounds (R-SD) to introduce bipartisan legislation to promote the use of preventive health care services including mammograms, colonoscopies, vaccines, and other routine examinations. The Preventive Care Awareness Act would create a grant program, public health campaign, and task force to encourage preventive care.
