WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, released the following statement on Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer’s reported plans to retire at the end of the current term:
“For more than 27 years Justice Breyer has served our country honorably, bringing his signature pragmatism to some of the most important legal decisions of our lifetimes. A true public servant, he has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to upholding equal justice under the law and ensuring the independence of the judiciary.
“In the Court, he leaves behind a remarkable legacy of work. His focus on the death penalty and antitrust throughout his career has played a key role in national conversations that will impact generations to come. And while his brilliance as a legal mind has always been clear, his keen understanding of how the Court’s decisions affect people in real, personal ways has made him one of the most accomplished jurists in our country’s history.”
“As the nomination and confirmation process for his successor moves forward, I am hopeful that the President’s nominee to the Court will follow in Justice Breyer’s footsteps as a steward of our democracy.”
