WASHINGTON, DC. – U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement after voting in favor of S. 3436 (Cruz Nord Stream 2 Sanctions):
“The Nord Stream 2 pipeline provides Russia with a powerful tool to further threaten European energy security. I voted in favor of restoring sanctions against the pipeline, standing firmly in support of the nation of Ukraine and other close partners in the region. Today’s vote demonstrated bipartisan opposition to the Biden administration’s inadequate response to growing Russian aggression.”
In March of 2021, Senator Fischer joined a group of her Republican colleagues in calling on the Biden Administration to implement a comprehensive package of sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project. Instead in May of last year, the Biden Administration lifted sanctions on the company behind the pipeline. Sanctions against Nord Stream 2 were previously included in the 2020 and 2021 NDAA, which both passed with bipartisan support.
Senator Fischer has been outspoken about her concerns with Russian’s military presence on the Ukraine border and has urged President Biden to show resolve in his conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russia has massed over 100,000 troops on the Ukrainian border.
