WASHINGTON, D.C. –  U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released the following statement today on the passing of Harold Wayne Newton of Hawesville, Kentucky:

“I was sad to learn of the December 26th passing of Harold Wayne Newton, my University of Kentucky law school classmate. Harold was a premier public servant who provided legal counsel in Hancock County for decades. More than that, he was a friend whom I will miss dearly.

“I would always see Harold during my visits to Hawesville, where he practiced law for his entire adult life and built the farm that became a sanctuary for him and his family. He was passionate about Kentucky history, dedicated to his community, and steadfast in his faith – all of which provided the grounding for his outstanding career in public life. In his roles as city attorney, trial commissioner, county attorney, school board attorney, and master commissioner, he left a deep mark on his Hancock County home, helping steer its government for decades.

“Harold’s impact extended far beyond his contributions to the public sector. He was active in his church, an ardent volunteer, and a kindhearted friend. More than anything, he was a family man, devoted to his wife Mickey – his high school sweetheart – his daughters Laura, Lisa, and Lesley, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchild. Elaine and I share our deepest condolences with the Newton family and will hold them in our prayers.”
