WASHINGTON, D.C. —U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program (CHP) has awarded $750,000 to the Whitehall Department of Police to hire six new law enforcement officers. According to the Justice Department, CHP provides funding to address the full-time sworn officer needs of state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies nationwide. CHP grants go directly to law enforcement agencies to hire new and/or rehire career law enforcement officers in an effort to increase their community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.
“Too many police departments across our state have had to lay off police officers due to budget challenges. We know that communities depend on properly trained law enforcement officers to protect and serve. These funds will enable the Whitehall Department of Police to hire and train dedicated public servants to build relationships with and protect our communities,” Brown said.
The Justice Department’s COPS Hiring Program is a competitive award program intended to reduce crime and promote public safety through community policing by providing direct funding for the hiring of career law enforcement officers.
