Schumer: Bipartisan Infrastructure & Jobs Act Makes Historic Investments To Directly Support Communities Across The North Country and Upstate New York

Following years of advocacy for the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC), U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer today announced that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, he negotiated in the Senate, includes $150 million for the NBRC, over triple its funding from previous years. Schumer said this historic increase in funding would allow for additional support for economic development and infrastructure projects throughout the North Country and Upstate NY.

“The Northern Border Regional Commission has played a unique and pivotal role in spurring economic development, upgrading infrastructure, and creating jobs in communities across the North Country and broader Upstate New York region,” said Senator Schumer. “Funding for the NBRC will have a direct impact on many rural and distressed counties in Upstate NY. As Majority Leader, I am proud to have secured this historic $150 million in funding for the NBRC which will support essential projects for the 28 counties in New York’s northern border region.”

Schumer said that in 2021 alone, the NBRC awarded over $4.6 million in economic and infrastructure investments directly to Upstate NY. Over the years, the NBRC has helped fund $73 million in essential projects for Upstate NY such as expanded access to high-speed internet, projects to reduce energy costs, support for entrepreneurs and small businesses, and workforce training.

The NBRC is a federal-state partnership focused on the economic revitalization of communities across the Northern Border region, which includes New York, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The Commission is composed of the governors of the four Northern Border states and a federal co-chair, and provides financial and technical assistance to communities in the region to support entrepreneurs, improve water, broadband, and transportation infrastructure, and promote other initiatives to improve the region’s economy. The northern border region of New York State includes 28 counties: Cayuga, Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Genesee, Greene, Hamilton, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Livingston, Madison, Montgomery, Niagara, Oneida, Orleans, Oswego, Rensselaer, Saratoga, Schenectady, Seneca, St. Lawrence, Sullivan, Washington, Warren, Wayne, Yates.
