Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) today announced that the Department of Transportation (DOT) has awarded $600,000 in grant funding to the Elko Band, part of the Te-Moak Tribe of Western Shoshone, to support planning for an extension of the tribe’s main roadway, Indian View Heights Drive. The tribe recently acquired new land to use for housing and economic expansion projects, and this funding will help ensure community members can safely and efficiently access these new developments.
“The Elko Band’s plans for housing and economic development in Elko will help ease housing needs and spur the local economy, and I’m glad to see these funds getting to Nevada’s tribal communities,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “I’ll keep pushing in the Senate to make sure we’re supporting tribes in Nevada with every possible resource, including through the recently passed bipartisan infrastructure bill.”
As part of her Innovation State Initiative, Senator Cortez Masto has worked to improve transportation all over the state. She secured multiple transportation provisions in the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that was signed into law this week to help Nevada communities make even more improvements to their roads and bridges, plan for and build electric vehicle infrastructure, make transit to school safer for students, and support smart cities that use technology to solve transportation challenges. The bipartisan infrastructure bill also includes $2.9 billion for Tribal transportation programs, including the Tribal High Priority Projects Program and aging tribal bridges.
