HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), Co-Chair of the Girl Scouts’ Honorary Troop Capitol Hill, today participated in a Girl Scout Badge College workshop at Marshall University, where she spoke to girls and young women about life skills and the importance of education and leadership.
“I can personally attest to how Girl Scouts encourage young women and girls to grow into strong leaders in whatever field they love and excel in,” Senator Capito said. “Whether it’s through education, STEM, or entrepreneurship, Girl Scouts are building the next generation of female leadership in our country. It was a pleasure meeting with so many bright, ambitious girls today at Marshall, and I’m proud to be a part of a group of women that is ending stereotypes and helping to empower our future West Virginia leaders.”
In partnership with the university and the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council, the event gave Scouts an opportunity to earn up to two badges in workshops.
Badges offered during the event included: Business Owner, Animal Helpers, Financing My Dreams, Truth Seeker, Savvy Shopper, Entrepreneur, Public Speaker and Public Innovator.
This past week, Senator Capito also hosted her 24th Girls Rise Up program at Bethlehem Elementary School and toured the Oglebay Good Zoo.
Senator Capito launched the West Virginia Girls Rise Up program in 2015 to instill confidence in young West Virginia women and empower them to be strong and kind female leaders. The program focuses on three areas: education, fitness, and self-confidence.
