[WINFIELD, IL] — Combat Veteran and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), a member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee who served in the Reserve Forces for 23 years, celebrated Veterans Day today by visiting a DuPage County Habitat for Humanity Build Site that will provide a fellow Illinoisan and Army Veteran, as well as their family, with an affordable home to call their own. During the event, Duckworth also underscored the need for affordable housing nationwide to help ensure our Veterans and their families don’t have to experience homelessness or housing insecurity. “We are all dishonored when any Veteran is forced lay their head down to sleep on the same streets they defended,” Duckworth said. “While we’ve made strides toward addressing Veteran housing like reducing the number of Veterans experiencing homelessness by over 40 percent in the last 10 years, we cannot stop until we’ve eliminated Veteran homelessness. I’m glad to see Chicagoland Habitat for Humanity is working in partnership with the Federal Government to help Veterans become homeowners. Programs like these–-and making sure our Veterans in need have access to them–-are how we continue to create change.”
Duckworth was joined by fellow Veteran Illinois State Representative Stephanie Kifowit (D-84), Chicagoland Habitat for Humanity officials and DuPage leadership.
Last year, the Government Accountability Office agreed to investigate the availability of affordable, accessible housing throughout the country, after Senator Duckworth, Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-IL-09) and former Congressman William Lacy Clay (D-MO-01) sent a letter to the GAO requesting a report.
