Senator Worked to Advance Marathon-ADM Partnership, Building North Dakota’s Leadership in Agriculture & Energy

DICKINSON, N.D. – Senator John Hoeven today toured the Marathon refinery in Dickinson and discussed the company’s joint venture with ADM using North Dakota-processed soybean oil for renewable diesel production. Marathon is investing in ADM’s announced soybean crushing plant near the Spiritwood Energy Park. The plant will exclusively supply its refined soybean oil to the Dickinson refinery, which underwent a $500 million conversion to produce renewable diesel in 2020 and reached full production capacity earlier this year. The facility can produce approximately 12,000 barrels of renewable diesel per day.

Hoeven worked to both secure the new crush plant at Spiritwood and advance the Marathon-ADM partnership as part of his broader efforts to build on North Dakota’s leadership in agriculture and energy. To this end, Hoeven worked:

  • With the Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corporation (JSDC) and ADM for more than two years to redevelop the site of the former barley malting facility at Spiritwood.
  • To tie the new crushing plant to North Dakota’s agriculture and energy industries, having highlighted the potential partnership between ADM and Marathon during a meeting with the JSDC and local leaders earlier this year.

“The partnership between Marathon’s renewable diesel facility and ADM’s soybean crush plant is a win-win for our state. It adds value for North Dakota-grown soybeans and provides another avenue for our farmers to generate revenue, while also growing our state’s role as a global energy powerhouse,” said Hoeven. “The refinery’s $500 million conversion enables North Dakota-produced energy to reach new low-carbon fuel markets, like California. Through efforts like these, our state will continue to be a leader in both feeding and powering our nation.”
