WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced that the U.S. Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Office of Justice Programs (OJP) has awarded a $163,227 grant to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office (MCCO) through the Strengthening the Medical Examiner-Coroner System Program. These funds will allow the MCCO to hire a fellow to help perform forensic postmortem examinations. The office fellow will received diversified and comprehensive training that affords them extensive hands-on experience in all aspects of forensic pathology.

“As the forensic medicine field continues to experience shortages, we need to ensure that funding is provided to support the hard-working individuals in the medical examiner workforce,” said Brown.

The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office (MCCO) provides professional autopsy services to 36 counties in Ohio and 1 county in Indiana. Over 7,400 deaths were reported to the MCCO in 2020. Complete forensic postmortem examinations were conducted on 2,263 cases.

The Bureau of Justice Assistance’s Strengthening the Medical Examiner-Coroner System Program is designed to increase the supply of forensic pathologists and support the enhancement of medicolegal death investigation services nationwide.
