Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) introduced the Manufactured Housing Community Improvement Act to help improve affordability and quality of life for families who live in manufactured housing communities. The bill would direct the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development to create a competitive grant program to reward manufactured home communities that prioritize affordability for working families.
Manufactured housing communities have been a key source of affordable housing in America for decades. However, because residents typically own the home itself, but not the land it sits on, they may struggle with unexpected cost increases. Cortez Masto’s legislation would help prevent these often devastating price by providing manufactured home communities operated by residents, nonprofits or private owners committed to maintaining affordability for their tenants with the funding they need to maintain their properties and keep them affordable to middle- and low-income families.
“Manufactured housing communities provide affordable housing to hundreds of families across Nevada and we must ensure they continue to serve the hardworking Nevadans who call them home,” said Senator Cortez Masto. “As we continue to address the affordable housing crisis across the country, manufactured housing communities will be a vital part of the solution and this legislation will provide those committed to long-term affordability for residents with critical investments that will help keep their costs low and their quality of life high.”
Senator Cortez Masto has been a longtime champion for affordable housing, including manufactured housing. She successfully passed the HUD Manufactured Housing Modernization Act in 2019. The legislation will ensure that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) supports state and local governments that wish to include manufactured housing as an affordable housing solution when applying for federal funding. She also included investments in manufactured housing communities in her Federal Home Loan Banks’ Mission Implementation Act.
