Senator Murray: “Democrats are putting money back into peoples’ pockets, and we are sending a message to workers and families across the country—you’re not on your own, we’re in this together. I look forward to getting this historic legislation to President Biden’s desk as soon as possible.”
(Washington, D.C.) – Today U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), Chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, issued the following statement on the newly announced Build Back Better framework negotiated by Senate Democrats.
“The Build Back Better framework sets us on the course to deliver a once-in-a-generation investment in our families, our workers, our economy, and our future. Passing Build Back Better will mean parents will actually be able to afford and find quality child care where they live, will be able to enroll their kids into preschool at no cost, and can continue to count on the expanded Child Tax Credit. It will mean people spending less money for their health care coverage and getting families off waitlists for caregivers. This legislation will mean making badly needed investments in our public health infrastructure, increasing access to affordable housing so everyone can keep a roof over their head, and taking concrete steps that will cut carbon emissions in a meaningful way, while mobilizing our entire country to take bold climate action. Build Back Better will deliver in life-changing, concrete ways for people across Washington state, and put us squarely on a path to a fairer, stronger future for all our children, workers, families, and communities.
“Make no mistake, this framework does not solve every problem we face—far from it. It is downright shameful that America is the only developed nation where working people are not guaranteed paid leave if they have a child, get seriously ill, or need to take care of a loved one—and I think I’ve made it abundantly clear I’m going to keep fighting to get paid leave included.
“Similarly—lifesaving drugs don’t do anyone any good if they can’t afford them—we can change that by empowering Medicare to negotiate lower prescription drug costs.
“11 million undocumented residents are living in the shadows under a deeply unjust and broken immigration system—including our Dreamers and so many essential workers—that’s why we must pass a fair pathway to citizenship for those who are American in every way but on paper.
“And we know that even with the unprecedented investments in this bill, we will have more to do—urgently—to tackle the full scope of the climate crisis.
“As all this work continues, in Build Back Better Democrats are putting money back into peoples’ pockets, and we are sending a message to workers and families across the country—you’re not on your own, we’re in this together. I look forward to getting this historic legislation to President Biden’s desk as soon as possible.”
