Yesterday, U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), and Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), co-chairmen of the Senate Taiwan Caucus, issued the following statement in observance of the 50th anniversary of the United Nation’s approval of Resolution 2758, which granted the People’s Republic of China membership in the United Nations. Since then, the CCP has misrepresented the resolution in efforts to undermine Taiwan’s standing and participation in the international community:
“As the U.S. and our allies look for ways to deter Beijing’s increasing coercion and aggressions against Taiwan, today’s 50th anniversary of the passage of Resolution 2758 should serve as a turning point to correct the continued injustice of Taiwan’s marginalization on the world stage. For five long decades, the People’s Republic of China has sought to intentionally misuse, misinterpret and mislead others on the underlying purpose of UN Resolution 2758. And while Taiwan was never prohibited from participation in UN entities, Beijing’s campaign to deny it a seat at the table has come at a high cost on a multitude of issues where Taiwan’s contributions are of tremendous value to the entire world.
“Beijing should not be allowed to continue twisting history and isolating Taipei. Taiwan’s meaningful participation and engagement is fully consistent with both the letter and the spirit of the resolution, and the United States and like-minded partners must do more to ensure our actions better reflect our words by standing by the truth, democracy and our partners in Taiwan.”
