WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded $945,996 in Distance Learning and Telemedicine grant funding to New London Local School District to help provide substance use disorder supports and services to students and families in conjunction with the Huron County Board of Mental Health and Addiction Services. The school district plans to build on its program, Substance Use – Community Youth Resiliency Project Work, to continue offering enrichment programs to teens via the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio (BGCNEO). More than 3,500 people are expected to benefit from these funds.

“Ohio schools need access to the technology necessary to provide proper health education services,” Brown said. “This funding will give New London Local School District the tools needed to adapt and ensure the community has the resources it needs to educate students on substance misuse and the treatment services available to them.”

New London Local School District will provide $142,989 in additional funding to bring the total project funding to $1,088,985.

These funds are a part of the USDA’s Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant Program (DLT). The program helps rural communities use the unique capabilities of telecommunications to connect to each other and to the world, helps rural residents tap into the enormous potential of modern telecommunications and the Internet for education and health care, and overcome the effects of remoteness and low population density.
