WASHINGTON–U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Near East, South Asia, Central Asia, and Counterterrorism, on Monday released the following statement on the attempted military coup in Sudan:
“I’m deeply concerned by the Sudanese military’s seizure of power and condemn General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s actions to dissolve the transitional government. After decades of suffering under Omar al-Bashir’s corrupt and oppressive regime, the people of Sudan had found hope in a democratic future, but this military coup puts that at risk. Prime Minister Hamdok and other detained civilian leaders must be swiftly released, the country must return to civilian rule, and peaceful protestors must be allowed to make their voices heard. The United States and our regional partners should send a clear message to the Sudanese military that failure to take these steps jeopardizes the future of economic aid to the country,” said Murphy.
In 2019, Murphy released a statement with U.S. Senators Chris Coons (D-Del.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), and Cory Booker (D-N.J.) on the removal of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.
