WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) today made this statement on the news that Jim Newsome, President and CEO of South Carolina Ports, will retire on June 30, 2022.  Newsome served in the position for 13 years.

SC Ports COO Barbara Melvin will become President and CEO of South Carolina Ports on July 1, 2022. Melvin will be the sixth leader in the history of the port and the first woman to lead a top 10 U.S. operating container port.

Graham said:

“Jim Newsome has much to be proud of from his years as the President and CEO of South Carolina Ports.  Under his steady leadership, and working closely with local, state, and federal officials, the Port of Charleston has exceeded every expectation.  Today, the Charleston Port is the backbone of the South Carolina economy.  I know Jim will stay involved in port issues even while he enjoys his well-earned retirement.”

“I also want to congratulate South Carolina Ports for selecting Barbara Melvin to succeed Jim.  Barbara is an outstanding choice who has worked closely with Jim for years.  She understands the needs of the Port and is well-respected throughout our state.  Barbara will build on Jim’s legacy.
