WASHINGTON–U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Thursday released the following statement after the U.S. Senate voted to approve a short-term debt ceiling fix.

“I’m glad we narrowly avoided disaster for now, and Leader Schumer deserves a tremendous amount of credit for getting Mitch McConnell to blink. However, I think we all wish we could have convinced Republicans to do more – stopgap measures are not reassuring to the American people, especially when Republicans will force us into this same dangerous game come December. Raising the debt ceiling isn’t about future spending – it’s about paying the bills we already owe and protecting American families from economic ruin. If Republicans continue to refuse to deal with the debt ceiling in a real way, it could be catastrophic for the economy – millions of jobs lost, a stock market crash, delays in Social Security payments and veterans’ benefits, and cuts to child nutrition and food assistance programs. Republicans might think creating economic chaos is good politics, but it’s the American people who they’ll hurt in the process,” said Murphy.
