WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced that the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management (FECM) has awarded two grants, totaling $2 million to Ohio University in Athens. This will support the development of new and safe uses of coal-wastes which will help create good-paying jobs in these communities.
“Ohio is leading the way on industrial energy efficiency,” said Brown. “These federal funds will allow us to continue to invest in cutting edge energy technology, so that we’re creating local jobs and improving our economy in a responsible and sustainable way, while developing the next generation of innovative technology.”
- $1,000,000 for Fused Deposition Modeling Additive Manufacturing of Carbonized Structures via Waste-Enhanced Filaments. This will develop carbonizable filaments that can be used in FDM printers to manufacture articles for building/construction, tooling and metals castings industries.
- $1,000,000 for Utilization of Carbon Supply Chain Wastes and Byproducts to Manufacture Graphite for Energy Storage Applications. This will use coal wastes and byproducts as a domestic feedstock for the production of battery-grade graphite materials.
The DOE’s Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management is responsible for federal research, development, and demonstration efforts on advanced power generation; power plant efficiency; water management; carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies; and emission control technologies, as well as the development of technological solutions for the prudent and sustainable development of our unconventional oil and gas domestic resources.
