WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, today released the following statement regarding the announcement that National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Dr. Francis Collins will step down from his position by the end of the year:
“Dr. Francis Collins is the most impactful and respected NIH Director our nation has ever seen. Having devoted nearly three decades to NIH, his investment in medical research and close partnership with research universities have resulted in a host of advanced medical capabilities. We’ve been fortunate to benefit from Dr. Collins’ leadership, particularly during a time when smart, sensible public health policies are critical to our success. I thank Dr. Collins for his incredible influence and wisdom. He will certainly be missed,” stated Senator Shelby.
