[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) today joined Southern Illinois University’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute Director John Shaw for a virtual fireside chat to discuss Senator Duckworth’s current actions in Congress including her nonpartisan Afghanistan War commission legislation and the importance of the economic relationship between Illinois and Southeast Asia. Duckworth also discussed the need to protect voting rights at the federal level, how the American Rescue Plan has helped Illinois recover from the impacts of COVID-19 and the importance of civic engagement.

“Don’t underestimate the power of your voice,” Duckworth said. “Democracy is hard, democracy is messy, but it’s because we allow everyone to have a voice. That’s what makes us great, and what’s going to continue making us better.”

Today’s fireside chat was part of Paul Simon Public Policy Institute’s “Understanding Our New World” virtual conversation series with government and private sector leaders, policy experts, political analysts, authors and journalists.
