U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and U.S .Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $26,325,641 in Head Start funding to support early childhood education and care services for low-income children. The funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Head Start Program and will be used to provide comprehensive early childhood education, health, and parent involvement services to low-income children and families.

“Study after study has shown that the better we prepare our young children, through programs like Head Start, the better they perform in school later in life,” said Senator Schumer. “This federal funding for students across New York will bring real results to our young scholars by providing them and their families with the resources they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom. I am proud to support this essential funding and I will continue to fight to ensure that early childhood education remains a priority, especially during the pandemic.”

Programs like Head Start help ensure that all children, regardless of socioeconomic background, have the resources they need to reach their full potential,” said Senator Gillibrand. “This investment in early childhood education programs will build a better future for children and families around New York State. I will continue fighting to make sure Head Start and similar programs have the resources they need to prepare our children for success.”

Head Start provides comprehensive child development programs for low-income children from birth to age five, as well as support and services for their families. Head Start programs primarily serve pregnant women, infants, and toddlers. The comprehensive services these programs offer include early education, health screenings, social and emotional health services, nutrition services, social services, and services for children with disabilities.
