Washington, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) hosted a video call with West Virginia students to encourage them to apply to the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy and answer student questions about the application process. Students interested in applying to a U.S. Service Academy can submit an application to Senator Manchin’s office by October 1, 2021.

“I’ve always said West Virginia is one of the most patriotic states in the nation and we have a long history of West Virginians selflessly serving our country. I was honored to speak with so many West Virginia students today about the wonderful opportunities at a U.S. Service Academy. These students are the future of West Virginia, and I applaud their interest in serving our country. Students interested in applying can reach out to my office with any questions or for help submitting their application by October 1, 2021,” said Senator Manchin.

“The U.S. Service Academies offer a unique and rewarding opportunity to earn a world-class education and the honor of serving our country,” said State Superintendent of Schools W. Clayton Burch. “West Virginia’s dedication to military service is second-to-none and represents the crossroads where Mountaineer spirit intersects with American pride. I thank Senator Manchin for bringing greater attention to the Academies by offering these informational calls. Our students are among the most dedicated and talented in the country, and taking their first steps into their bright futures via the U.S. Service Academies would serve them well.”

“I appreciate Senator Machin’s office for giving us this opportunity! My hope is that this program will stoke West Virginian students’ interest in attending the United States Naval Academy and encourage them to explore all the great programs we have on offer! There is a lot of great information included in ‘Academy Connections’, but there is also plenty more to learn. We are always available to help students who are determined to attend USNA or who would just like to know more! Please feel free to reach out to us at Usna.edu/Admissions/Connect. You can also check out our Social media pages on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter,” said Ben LeBrun, Nominations and Appointments, U.S. Naval Academy.

“The Merchant Marine Academy welcomes any opportunity to gain exposure to the students of West Virginia and appreciate Sen Manchin’s efforts in that regard,” said Lt. Dorlin Wheeler, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

“I believe this program is very beneficial. This event provides good insight that can hopefully spark an interest in young students. Not only that, it’s gives students sufficient information and guides them through next steps if they’d like to pursue one of the academies,” 2nd Lt. Lynee Jad, U.S. Air Force Academy.

“Today’s program will provide West Virginia students with the information they need to apply to service academies and one day, be leaders in the armed forces,” said Captain Nicole Carter, U.S. Military Academy.

Last week, Senator Manchin hosted a virtual Academy Connections event with representatives of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy to give students important insight and information before applying.
