WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that NeighborWorks America has awarded a $472,305 Housing Stability Counseling Program grant to Famicos Foundation in Cleveland. This grant will help provide critical housing counseling services to individuals and families who have struggled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This award is made possible through the American Rescue Plan, which Brown helped write and pass.

“Losing a home to foreclosure or eviction turns a family’s life upside down – no one should be left without a home, especially during a pandemic” said Sen. Brown. “Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, vital funding for housing counselors will ensure homeowners and renters – especially Black and brown homeowners and renters who have been hardest hit by this pandemic – have the tools and support they need to navigate our nation’s complex housing system.”

In February, Brown and Sen. Menendez (D-NJ) introduced legislation to expand access to housing counseling and assistance services for homeowners, renters, people experiencing homelessness, and people at risk of homelessness and help them navigate their housing options and rights during the COVID-19 crisis.

NeighborWorks America is a Congressionally-created partnership between community, public, and private stakeholders.  NeighborWorks provides locally-driven community development and counseling to families facing the threat of foreclosure.  Through 240 community-based nonprofit organizations, NeighborWorks helps to reduce the foreclosures that threaten neighborhoods and local economies, produce and manage affordable rental properties, and revitalize surrounding communities. NeighborWorks also administered housing counseling funds for the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling program, which helped homeowners stay in their homes following the financial crisis.
