CINCINNATI, OH – Today, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) announced that The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) awarded Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo $199,323 in a federal grant to help support and strengthen their emergency medical services (EMS). In total, nationwide, SAMHSA awarded $5.6 million to strengthen the role of EMS personnel in rural America.
According to SAMHSA, their Rural EMS Training Grant will fund the recruitment and training of EMS personnel in rural areas, with a particular focus on addressing mental health and substance use disorders in emergency settings.
“This grant is great news for Northwest Ohio. The social isolation and increased anxiety caused by the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated many of the issues Ohioans face that can negatively impact mental health and substance use disorders,” said Portman. “This SAMHSA grant will help Mercy Health in Toledo to continue their good work of employing EMS personnel to help to treat individuals, and help people get on a path to long-term recovery.”
