WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-Del.) today issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s 5-4 opinion on an unconstitutional Texas law that will erode women’s health and reproductive freedoms:

“I am deeply troubled, though unfortunately not terribly surprised, that a majority of the Supreme Court has decided to disregard nearly 50 years of legal precedent and allow an unconstitutional abortion ban to take effect in Texas. The law itself is absurd in its design, but it will have a very real and devastating impact on the lives of women who will no longer be able to fully control decisions about their health. It is notable that even Chief Justice Roberts, an ardent judicial conservative, disagreed with the majority of the Supreme Court in this decision. Despite this disappointing failure to uphold decades of precedent and protect the rights of women, I refuse to give up in this critical fight.  We must do everything in our power to restore these basic rights and ensure that women continue to have the right to make their own health care decisions in Texas and the rest of the United States.”
