CHARLESTON, W.Va. – U.S. Senators Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.) and Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), members of the Senate Appropriations Committee, today announced $273,793 from the U.S. Department of Education to Marshall University Research Corporation to support the Heart of Appalachia Educational Opportunity Center. This program provides counseling and information on college admissions to West Virginians interested in entering or continuing a postsecondary education. Additionally, the program provides training services to increase financial and economic literacy, including information on financial planning, financial aid and loan application processes. Last month, the Senators announced $629,000 for two Talent Search programs at Marshall University.
“West Virginians should have access to higher education opportunities, regardless of age, location, or socioeconomic status,” Senator Capito said. “The Educational Opportunity Centers Program helps provide the support and counseling our students need to confidently make decisions about their postsecondary education. I have been a longtime supporter of TRIO programs like this, and look forward to the impact this investment will have in West Virginia.”
“Every West Virginian deserves the opportunity to continue their education if they choose to, regardless of their age or background. The Heart of Appalachia Educational Opportunity Center is an excellent program that encourages and advises West Virginians on educational opportunities, and teaches vital skills including financial planning and loan applications. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I will continue to advocate for educational opportunities for all West Virginians,” Senator Manchin said.
