WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced that the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has awarded $109,967 to the University of Cincinnati to develop a system that can detect ball screw degradation at an early stage and predict its future health state. This will allow both large and small manufacturers who utilize ball screws to benefit from this sensing and monitoring technology. Ball screws are critical elements found within a range of manufacturing equipment including machine tools and industrial robotics.
“Ohio has a proud history of leading the country in manufacturing innovation. We’re building on that legacy by making new investments in manufacturing research, which will help create jobs,” said Brown. “Not only will this investment support faculty and students at the University of Cincinnati, but it will also help Ohio’s small businesses and manufacturers be better equipped to compete with competitors around the country and the world.”
The NIST Engineering Laboratory promotes U.S. innovation and industrial competitiveness by advancing measurement science, standards, and technology for engineered systems in ways that enhance economic security and improve quality of life.
