JERSEY CITY, N.J. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), the highest ranking Latino in U.S. Congress, released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to direct the Biden-Harris administration to reinstate the Trump administration’s “Remain in Mexico” policy:
“The Supreme Court’s decision is a disastrous step that further undermines the United States’ longstanding status as a nation of immigrants and a refuge for those fleeing violence and crisis.
“The Trump administration’s immoral use of the ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy is a stain on our standing humanitarian leadership around the world. This xenophobic program forced vulnerable people – including pregnant women and victims of violence – to wait in squalid tent camps in dangerous Mexican border communities where the Government of Mexico could not guarantee their safety and security.
“At a time when the United States is encouraging countries around the world to open their doors to refugees, including those fleeing Afghanistan, the Supreme Court’s decision will undercut our diplomatic efforts. I urge the Biden-Harris administration to take swift action in using its executive power to curtail and put a lawful end to the implementation of this disgraceful policy.”
