WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) issued the following statement regarding the Biden administration’s proposal to overhaul the U.S. asylum system:
“Part of the solution to the crisis at the southern border involves asylum reform and reducing the time it takes for those seeking relief to have their cases heard. The Biden administration has proposed significant changes to the asylum process, including expanding the role of asylum officers to try to alleviate the backlog of pending cases.
“I share the goal of improving our asylum system and hope that the administration will use the comment period for this rule to hear from a wide variety of stakeholders. We cannot afford a policy change that would incentivize people to abuse the asylum process and we must ensure that those who do not qualify for asylum are removed from the country expeditiously.
“I stand ready to work with the Biden administration and colleagues in the Senate on both sides of the aisle on reforms that will bring credibility to our asylum system and provide relief for those fleeing persecution.”
